Floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have left many families without safe homes. Human Initiative's assessment found that around 67% of surveyed homes were severely damaged or lost. This project will support the construction of temporary shelters, known locally as Huntara, while also contributing to wider recovery needs across affected communities.
Many families affected by the disaster are still living without adequate shelter. Damaged homes, disrupted water systems, affected schools, lost farmland, and reduced income have made recovery difficult. Without a safe place to stay, families face greater challenges in protecting children, securing belongings, maintaining daily routines, and beginning to rebuild their lives.
The project will primarily support temporary shelter construction through materials, structural framing, roofing, flooring, walls, doors, transportation, construction, monitoring, and community support. Human Initiative has already supported 52 shelters in Langkahan and 35 in Sunting. Funds may also support water, sanitation, education, healthcare, livelihoods, and other urgent recovery needs.
Safe temporary shelters can give families greater protection, privacy, stability, and space to begin rebuilding after disaster. Combined with support for clean water, education, healthcare, livelihoods, and community facilities, the project can help affected communities move from emergency conditions toward longer-term recovery, dignity, resilience, and greater independence.
