Prevent Child Trafficking Through Education

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your continued support of The Freedom Story. This quarter we focused on understanding how COVID-19 has impacted our community. This includes partnering with families living in poverty to help them generate more income, so that they can keep their children in school, rather than having to pull them out, putting them at risk of being trafficked and exploited.

In the last 3 months, we have raised over $9,000 through GlobalGiving. We at The Freedom Story cannot thank you enough! Because of you, we have been able to do some great work in our Sustainable Livelihoods program.

We are working with 15 families to generate income through things like planting vegetables and raising pigs and chickens. Each family has an average of 5 family members, and nine of the families have elderly family members. Half of the families have an average income of less than $1,270 USD per year. The average debt is $4,200 USD, largely due to agriculture and educational costs.

We have supported these families to begin these activities with financial assistance from The Freedom Story. We supplement this with home visits and skills and knowledge training. In the last 3 months, we have conducted 54 home visits. We also conducted a training for 27 community members on financial literacy in order to help them manage their finances better.

Thank you so much for your support of these families. Together we are breaking the cycle of trafficking at the source.

Your generosity has already had an immediate impact on lives here in Thailand. COVID-related challenges put children at greater risk of trafficking by increasing poverty, increasing marginalization, and increasing the likelihood of children being pulled out of school to work to help keep their families afloat.Your support is critical to furthering education and empowerment, while reducing the vulnerabilities that traffickers prey on. 

Because of your generosity our local staff can:

• support families like Preeda and Ying’s so children can stay in school and pursue their dreams, rather than being trafficked as their mother was. 

• apply for governmental support for migrant families who lack access to their rights. This helps counteract wage theft and ensure access to social security.

• train parents and children understand the dangers of online exploitation and are equipped to fight it in their communities and households.

• Support families to conduct income generation projects like raising chickens and planting organic vegetables.
