Thank you for your continued support of The Freedom Story! Your generosity is helping to empower at-risk students and their families to become partners in our mission and assist the wider community in a variety of ways.
Community involvement has always been intrinsic to our programs, especially in Nan, where the community members are highly engaged because they’ve come to value and believe in the work we do. Their involvement is entirely their choice, and they choose to participate because they see the value of what we offer and have come to trust in the relationship that our staff has developed with them.
Over the past six months, pockets of Northern Thailand, including many of our scholarship families and others in the community, have been heavily impacted by floods. Homes and agricultural farmland were hit with flash flooding, threatening many families’ livelihoods. This year’s Trafficking in Persons Report says that natural disasters exacerbated by climate change will have a drastic impact on the number of displaced families and an increase in human trafficking. “The UN Environment Programme indicates that human trafficking has the potential to increase by 20-30 percent during humanitarian disasters due to lost livelihoods and disrupted families.”
The Freedom Story staff acted quickly after the flood by registering local farmers for government assistance and helping coordinate the necessary details for them to receive aid. Together with the scholarship students, their families, and community members, we helped clean up a lot of the damage caused by the flooding. Many of the families in our Sustainable Livelihoods program were among those affected as their farmlands were damaged, but The Freedom Story assisting these families to better weather this damage will subsequently increase their resilience to trafficking. As this example shows, the community members in Nan are not passive recipients of our prevention programs; instead, they join actively in improving their circumstances.
This would not have been possible without the partnership from you, our supporters. Thank you for partnering with The Freedom Story in preventing child trafficking and exploitation in Northern Thailand.
In Hope,
The Freedom Story
