I hope you're having a great holiday week! I wanted to share a story of resilience that moved me to tears when I first read it. It also highlights the impact of your generosity here in Thailand.
On September 11th, one of our community volunteers, Nang, watched helplessly as floodwaters surged into her rented home in Chiang Rai. Within an hour, the water had risen from ankle to knee height, sweeping away nearly everything her family owned. Her car, her sewing machines, school supplies for her two children, motorcycles, and even precious family photos were destroyed.
The loss of her interpreter training certificates—a record of years of hard work—was particularly devastating. To make matters worse, her husband lost his job shortly after because he had to take time off to clean out their house, leaving Nang as the sole provider for their family.
It’s stories like Nang’s that remind us of the critical need for timely support. Natural disasters like these floods don’t just destroy possessions—they destabilize entire lives, making families vulnerable to exploitation and trafficking.
Nang is a migrant from Burma, and despite living in Thailand for over 20 years, her situation is still precarious. We know that children of migrant workers are some of the most vulnerable to human trafficking.
When I heard her story, it broke my heart. But what truly inspired me was her courage. She told us, “As long as I am alive, there is always hope for rebuilding a better future for my family.”
This is why we do what we do. Thank you for making it possible for us to show up for families like Nangs. We are so thankful for your generosity and partnership.
With gratitude,
Lucy McCray
