Tang is a determined 16-year-old with dreams of finishing her education and helping her family. Tang lives with her grandparents, who earn a living from seasonal farming, growing crops like chili peppers to cover basic expenses, her medical costs, and her education. However, Tang’s journey has always been a bit more challenging than others. Living with an autoimmune disease, Tang must travel monthly to the hospital over 8 hours away in another province, for ongoing treatments.
Recently, the severe flooding upended Tang’s life and her family’s stability. The floodwaters left their home unliveable, forcing them to move to a temporary government shelter. Essential items like bedding, household supplies, and electrical appliances were destroyed. Tang’s school uniforms and study materials were also lost, keeping her out of school for two weeks.
The floods have taken an especially hard toll on the family’s income. Their rice crop was ready to be harvested when the flood hit, wiping out their entire annual income, and submerging the next year’s seedlings. This not only wiped out their expected income but also forced them to buy rice, which increased their financial strain. Now, Tang’s grandparents face a year of reduced income, adding significant stress and debt as they struggle to meet their basic needs.
The Freedom Story team has stepped in to support Tang and her family during this challenging time. With the generosity of our community, we ensured they could rebuild their lives and their home. We gave them the necessities they needed to get back to school and begin living in their home again. Recognizing the long-term impact of this disaster, we’re committed to providing them with continuous assistance, helping them regain financial stability, and supporting Tang’s education so that she can continue to focus on her future.
Thank you for standing with us to create a future where children are protected and empowered to thrive. Together, we are changing lives.
With gratitude,
Lucy McCray
