Greetings from Wildlife Trust of India!
Hope you are doing great.
We are back with the updates on our project ‘Thank our forest guards this World Ranger Day, which you so generously chose to donate for.
Thank you so much for your kind donation and for believing in our work. It is through your support that we are able to work towards our vision of a secure natural heritage of India.
Employed as a temporary watcher in the Meppady Range of South Wayanad Forest Division, Mr. Aneesh* met with an accident. He was managing an elephant depredation conflict case on 13th of March. While driving away a herd of wild elephants from a private property, a firecracker exploded in his right hand and he sustained severe injuries to his hand in the accident. Coming from a humble background, Mr. Aneesh’s* family was under severe financial stress due to the expenses incurred in the treatment for his injured hand. To supplement the medical bills, we provided him with an ex-gratia of INR 25,000/-
India’s Protected Areas (PA’s) encompassing its national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, biosphere reserves and even marine national parks and sanctuaries are guarded by frontline enforcement staff. Many PA employees are temporary staff or daily labourers, who work along with permanent employees, to patrol, monitor and ensure protection of the PAs.
They however lack adequate accident assurance to cover occupational hazards in their line of duty – such as attacks from wild animals, poachers, smugglers etc. The accident assurance scheme is critical for enhancing their morale as they constantly fight against wildlife crime and tirelessly work to monitor and protect the forests.
That’s all for today’s updates. Thank you once again for helping the forest guards of India and supporting them in their difficult times. We will soon be back with more updates from the project. Till then, take care!
Warm regards,
Team WTI
