Ex-gratia support to a temporary forest watcher injured on duty.

By Monica Verma | Project Leader

Greetings from Wildlife Trust of India!

Thank you so much for making a donation to our project ‘Thank our Forest Guards this World Ranger Day’. With your valuable support, we could provide ex-gratia aid to cover the medical expenses of an injured forest watcher who is working as a temporary staff with the Kerala Forest Department.

Mr. Jijo C*, working as a temporary forest watcher in the Kalpetta range of the South Wayanad Forest Division of Kerala got severely injured after being attacked by an elephant. Jijo was a part of a team dissipating a herd of elephants that was depredating crops in a private property at the time of the attack. Preventing crop depredation and keeping elephant population away from human habitation is a part of a routine of the forest watchers which is key to preventing negative interactions between humans and elephants.

In the attack, Jijo’s right leg sustained severe injuries for which he was admitted to the Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode, Kerala. He underwent multiple surgeries as a part of an extensive treatment for his right leg. The injury meant a lot of unanticipated expense for Jijo and his family. To support them in their need of hour, we stepped up to cover the medical expenses incurred for treating Jijo.

The support was a part of the 'Supplementary accident assurance scheme' of WTI to support forest guards and their families in case of death or injury on duty.

Thank you once again for helping Jijo and his family. We will be back soon with more updates from the priject. Till then, take care.

Warm regards,

Team WTI
