As we approach the holiday season (yes, even refugees get holidays…but not from being refugees), all of us at DARE Network want to wish you the best for the coming year. 2020 has been a tough one all around the world, no less in the refugee camps.
Usually at this time of year, we negotiate with the local authorities to take our DARE Teams out of the camps for a day. We go to somewhere beautiful in nature such as a provincial park or waterfall so people can play and feel free, at least for one day. But not to be this year, as the camps are locked down due to Covid19. No one is going in or out.
In Karen State, our Addiction Workers are mostly from the refugee camps on the Thai side of the border. At this time of year, we usually arrange for them to go “home” to the refugee camps to spend time with their families and friends. Alas, this year they must remain at the DARE Centre in Karen State, as the border is completely closed between Myanmar and Thailand. Knowing them, they will make the most of it. They will celebrate the season and include the recovering clients who also cannot go home, due to Covid19.
So, you see, we are all missing our families and friends this year. Perhaps you can understand the feeling the refugees have every day of their lives. It is sure that you do, because you made a beautiful donation to help them feel secure and loved.
Happy Holidays and a Happier New Year to All
