Project Report | Dec 1, 2025
The Reporter for Kids Project Report2025.vol 03

By The Reporter for Kids | The Reporter for Kids

Our months-long special report, The Greatest Wave of Migration in History, highlights the fact that this is the moment of fastest human movement in world history. In 2024, as many as 300 million people migrated to other countries.

In addition to the unfortunate wars and people forced to leave their homes due to climate change in recent years, a key driver is developed nations facing severe labor shortages and aggressively recruiting talent due to declining birth rates. As major countries open up their immigration policies, other nations feel the ripple effect, and Taiwan has become a target for neighboring Japan's massive talent recruitment.

While migrants were mostly retirees and the wealthy in the past, the average age is now dropping, and there is a growing number of young and middle-aged skilled workers. What are the goals and aspirations of those choosing to leave Taiwan to work hard elsewhere? We also interviewed three migrants, allowing readers to see the real-life stories behind the statistics. Each story also reflects the challenges Taiwan currently faces regarding its labor environment and political situation.
