Provide Mental Health Support for Rural Children

For children who need psychological support, progress is not always marked by big milestones. Often, it is found in something much simpler: having a safe place to return to, week after week.

We have continued providing regular psychological support to six children from rural communities surrounding Dumbrava. The children participating in the program have different needs and different stories, from autism spectrum disorders and grief to family difficulties, anxiety, social isolation and the challenges of adolescence.

What they have in common is limited access to psychological services close to home. In rural communities, finding appropriate and consistent support can be difficult, and for many families travelling regularly to a larger city is simply not realistic.

This is why continuity has become one of the most important parts of our program. The sessions take place at Dumbrava, in an environment the children already know, and give them the possibility to build a long-term relationship with the psychologist rather than receiving help only during a crisis.

During these months, the children have continued working on expressing and understanding emotions, managing difficult situations, communicating their needs and building confidence. Progress looks different for each child. Sometimes it is being able to talk about something that was previously too difficult. Sometimes it is handling frustration a little better, asking for help, or simply feeling safe enough to open up.

There is no quick solution when it comes to a child's emotional wellbeing. What we can offer is time, consistency and a place where they know someone will continue to listen.

And that is what we will keep doing.
