From Learning to Earning with Threads of Hope

By Allie Renar | Operations & Finance Manager

This May marked an important milestone for Threads of Hope as 100 women and girls completed the final month of teaching and learning activities. Throughout the program, participants have built practical tailoring skills, strengthened literacy and numeracy, and gained important knowledge about health, psychosocial well-being, confidence, and women’s empowerment.

During the month, classes focused on completing the remaining lessons, reviewing key skills, preparing for final examinations, and supporting participants as they prepared to apply what they had learned beyond the classroom. Final examinations were successfully conducted in tailoring, literacy, and health and psychosocial awareness. Students participated actively, and results showed clear improvement in both practical and theoretical knowledge compared to the beginning of the program.

In tailoring classes, participants reviewed and practiced measuring, drawing, cutting, sewing, and garment finishing. They completed advanced garment designs and demonstrated greater independence, accuracy, and confidence in their work. By the end of the month, many participants were able to complete sewing tasks independently and produce finished garments with improved quality.

The impact of the tailoring training is already visible. Several participants have received tailoring orders from neighbors, relatives, and community members, and some have earned income through their work. Others are now sewing clothes for themselves and their families, helping reduce household expenses while increasing their self-reliance. These achievements clearly show how participants have progressed from learners to skilled individuals who are able to support themselves, contribute to their households, and create opportunities for others.

Literacy classes also showed strong progress. Participants completed remaining lessons, practiced reading and writing, strengthened basic numeracy skills, and reviewed topics covered throughout the program. Many students demonstrated improved reading, writing, comprehension, and problem-solving abilities. These skills are helping participants feel more confident in daily life and better prepared to pursue future opportunities.

The health and psychosocial awareness sessions helped participants build knowledge around personal well-being, emotional health, communication, self-confidence, and family support. These lessons were especially important in helping women strengthen both practical life skills and emotional resilience.

One of the most encouraging developments this month was the way participants began using their new skills outside the classroom. Some women started promoting their tailoring services through smartphones and social media, taking photos of their products, communicating with customers, and exploring new ways to market their work. For many, this was their first experience using technology for business purposes.

Several participants also began sharing their skills with others. Huma, one participant, began teaching young students using the knowledge and confidence she gained through Threads of Hope. Her story reflects the ripple effect of the program: when one woman gains skills and confidence, she can pass that knowledge to others in her family and community.

Other participants, including Mahbooba, Nargis, and Maryam, began working together to offer tailoring services. They started accepting orders for dresses and other garments, showing teamwork, initiative, and the ability to turn training into income-generating opportunities. Marina also accepted a tailoring contract during the Eid season and completed children’s clothing using the skills she developed through the program.

Throughout May, attendance remained strong, and no participant dropouts were reported. The learning environment remained safe, supportive, and respectful. There were no safeguarding or security concerns during the reporting period. Minor challenges, such as the need for extra revision support before final examinations, were addressed through additional guidance, practical demonstrations, and close follow-up from trainers.

As the teaching phase concluded, preparations began for the final distribution of sewing machines and certificates. These next steps will help participants continue building on their progress and support their transition toward greater economic independence.

Threads of Hope demonstrates how education, vocational training, and emotional support can transform lives. The women in this program are not only learning to sew, read, and write; they are gaining confidence, earning income, supporting their families, teaching others, and imagining new possibilities for their futures.
