Threads of hope: empower women from Tamil Nadu

Dear Donors,

With this final report we would like to update all of you about or project and to thank all the people that in these last five years have stood by the side of all the Indian women supported by “Threads of hope”.

India has made remarkable progress toward women right’s protection, though the country remains home – for example – to the largest number of child brides worldwide. One in three of the world’s child brides lives in India. Nearly one in four young women in India (23%) were married or in union before their 18^th birthday and the prevalence of child marriage varies across states and union territories. A girl’s risk of child marriage depends on certain background characteristics. Girls who live in rural areas or come from poorer households are at greater risk and a higher proportion of child brides are found among those with little or no education.

That’s why education and training is so fundamental for the growth, the independence and for the personal development of women, as well as for the development of the entire community. Thanks to our project Aleimar, in partnership with our local partner Mother Theresa Social Service Organization (MTSSO), a great number of women have taken part in tailoring and IT courses, increasing their employment opportunities and the possibility to start their own business.

After five years, we can confirm that thanks to the help of a private company that has decided to support the project and thanks to self-sustenance activities launched by the project, it will be able to self-finance. That’s why Aleimar will provide a more sporadic support to MTSSO.
