ToakLink Shipping Project

By Sum Abiut | Chairman, ToakLink Community Association

Over the past three months, the ToakLink Community Association has been actively working toward making the ToakLink Shipping Project a reality. While we are still in the early fundraising stage, significant progress has been made on the ground — and the need for this project has only grown more urgent.

We recently spoke with David, a fisherman from South East Ambrym, who told us: "Last month I lost an entire week's catch because no boat came. My family depends on what I sell at the market." Stories like David's are common across our communities. Farmers continue to lose up to 40% of their crops because there is simply no reliable way to get produce to market before it spoils. Families in remote villages are paying double or triple the normal price for basic goods like rice, medicine, and school supplies because of irregular and expensive shipping.

On the project side, we have completed a comprehensive feasibility study covering vessel specifications, route planning across five provinces (Tafea, Shefa, Malampa, Penama, and Sanma), competitive pricing analysis, a cooperative profit-sharing model, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance requirements with Vanuatu's maritime authorities. This study gives us — and our donors — a clear, evidence-based roadmap for how ToakLink Shipping will operate sustainably. We have also begun community outreach to grow our membership base, as the cooperative model depends on members contributing equity and receiving discounted fares and profit shares in return.

With 3 generous donors supporting us so far, we are grateful for every contribution. Our next priority is to increase visibility and grow our donor base so we can move toward vessel acquisition. We invite you to share our project with anyone who believes in connecting isolated island communities to the opportunities they deserve. Thank you for standing with us.
