Together against Tuberculosis in the slums, Mumbai

Our partner, Lok Seva Sangam (LSS), is dedicated to providing free medical support to those in need. Every day, local staff is on a journey to bring hope and healing to those affected by tuberculosis (TB) in the slum areas of Ward L and M in Mumbai. As we approach the end of 2024, we want to reflect on some key program statistics from 2023. Lok Seva Sangam team provided follow-up support to 1,989 TB patients, ensuring they followed the medication regimen. We are happy to share that LSS registered a 96.6% success rate in tuberculosis treatment!

Nutrition and recovery from TB go hand in hand. Proper nutrition strengthens the immune system, helping patients fight infections and recover faster. Access to essential nutrients is lifesaving for tuberculosis patients and plays a vital role. Right nutrition increases the body’s strength and ability to fight the disease. For this reason, we ensure every patient gets the nourishment needed to heal, supporting their nutritional needs.

This enormous work is possible only thanks to Lok Seva Sangam's local staff, who is committed to making a difference in patient’s life. Every day, they show up with compassion and purpose, dedicating their lives to those affected by tuberculosis. We interviewed them to understand what drives them to fight against TB. We asked them how they describe LSS’s fight against TB. They defined it as a mission to bring patients' lives back on track, where success is when a child can return to school or when a patient regains his self-confidence. They highlighted the joy of witnessing a family reunited and happy, the fulfillment of helping patients achieve good health and the shared vision of building a TB-free society.
We also asked the staff what motivates them to continue the fight against TB every day. They shared that their drive comes from increasing patients' hope and showing them that life is worth fighting for. They are inspired by the mindset of saving one more life and by the chance to instill hope for a brighter future. Helping patients overcome their fears and seeing them embrace recovery as a real possibility is fulfilling. For the patients, it represents a new beginning; for Lok Seva Sangam’s team, it is a shared journey toward well-being. Most importantly, they emphasized that every patient matters and this is the reason why they work wholeheartedly every day.
