BROMLEY YOUTH MUSIC TRUST - DECEMBER 2022

BYMT 'Elf The Musical' November 2022

As we approach the end of a long and productive term (September to December 2022), tired but proud of our achievements, Bromley Youth Music Trust (BYMT) would like to pay tribute to the hard work of our young musicians and the commitment of our dedicated team of trustees, teachers and support staff.

In September we welcomed everyone back to our music centres for bands and orchestras and choirs. It was such a joy to hear the sound of live music in the corridors of our buildings again! Some of our young students returned with a little trepidation - it's not surprising that long periods of studying in isolation during Covid lockdowns had a long-term impact - but we know playing music and singing in a group can boost confidence and social skills and the end of term concerts and shows proved this beyond measure -belonging to the BYMT family can make such a difference - Music Changes Lives!

Musical Theatre started the performance season with 'Elf the Musical', alongside a 30-piece orchestra, spreading  SparkleJollyJingleJoy to standing ovations! We continued our Autumn performances with a series of 5 concerts which featured more than 850 student and adult performers. Just a few of our highlights included a fantastic performance of ‘James Bond’ music by the combined junior groups from Bromley Youth Music Trust, Anerleyand Beckenham. The BYMT Pops Band, whose members are mainly secondaryschool students, delighted audiences with music from ‘The Greatest ShowmanOne of the BYMT adult choirs, Sing! Bromley, gave an uplifting performance of ‘Carol of the Bells’ and Bromley Youth Chamber Orchestra played an exceptional programme which included Mendelssohn and Britten. Bringing the concert season to a close, the Bromley Youth Concert Band performed with the Bromley Youth Choir for a festive Christmas Carol concert.

At the start of next term (January to April 2023), we are holding an open rehearsal week from 7th-13th January 2023. This exciting introduction to BYMT groups will enable new students to experience first-hand the high-quality music making opportunities on offer. It will also give current instrumental ensemble members the opportunity to experience singing in one of our fabulous choirs.

We are proud to be expanding our provision for those children at the start of their musical journey and in January our new Roundabout class on Saturdays at BYMT will be launched. This ensemble will give children a chance to learn keyboards, djembe drumming, recorders and to sing together.

All of us in the BYMT family know that MUSIC CHANGES LIVES! Hear what Michael has to say:

I joined BYMT after taking part in ‘Band OnThe Run’ at my primary school. I could not contain my excitement at the prospect of learning a Brass Instrument. I used to get home and immediately run to play the pieces we had learned to play along to the backing tracks. Today as I start university, I have been overwhelmed by this environment which is unfamiliar to me. However, my time at BYMT has led me to feel like I am at home wherever I can make music with others. I joined the orchestra when I got to college. It then felt as though I belonged there which helped me to settle into it.

MUSIC CHANGES LIVES!
