Famine is caused by the systemic breakdown of social supports. Food production and distribution, food delivery, and food preparation systems sometimes fail when there is extreme poverty, illness and civil conflict. All of these systems failed for this young man from Kagohwa Village, and he was very, very hungry when we found him.
More than hungry, in fact he had a starvation illness known as marasmus. And from the looks of his critical condition, he may have had a severe deficiency of vitamin D3, known as Pellagra.
Luckily for him, a generous donor wanted to help, and we made an urgent outreach to provide food, bedding and clothing as well as an 11-day stay in the hospital to get him back on his feet.
He is home again now and still hungry, because his health is tenuous as he battles against hunger.
Yet, just this morning he was taken back to the hospital again to manage ongoing health challenges. So we are sending more than porridge this time...we are sending our hopes and prayers to help him on his path towards a healthy childhood. Thank you for making this work possible.
