Project Report | May 10, 2018
Seeing the impact of rehabilitation on women burn survivors in India

By Marie-Claude Pelchat | Project Leader

In November 2016, a team from Sunshine returned to Chennai to visit our partner International Foundation for Crime Prevention and Victim Care (PCVC) and catch up on their work bringing rehabilitation to women burn survivors.

From 2013 to 2015, Sunshine Foundation ran a three-year training project to help PCVC set up a Recovery and Care Center for women burn survivors in Chennai. By training PCVC staff in Chennai and holding internships for them in Taiwan, Sunshine supported PCVC in establishing the basis for comprehensive physical and psychosocial rehabilitation services for women burn survivors after hospital discharge.

A year after the end of the project, the Recovery and Care Center provides stable and attentive services to women burn survivors from across Tamil Nadu seeking medical treatment in Chennai. It all starts at the hospital, with visits and consultations done by PCVC’s medical social worker to identify needs, and continues through home visits done after the women are discharged from hospital. During these visits, serious cases can be identified and referred for intensive rehabilitation services provided in the Recovery and Care Center. This system ensures that women in need receive the help they deserve.

During our visit, we not only observed the dedicated work of PCVC’s staff and heard positive stories of emotional empowerment of women burn survivors, but we also visited projects that contribute to the economic empowerment of these women through training and employment opportunities.

We would like to thank all our donors on GlobalGiving for making this partnership with PCVC possible and contribute to supporting the creation of an unique initiative for women burn survivors in India. Your donations help burn survivors around the world have access to rehabilitation, and regain the chance to live a full, thriving life.
