Sunshine welcomes visiting student

By Marie-Claude Pelchat | Project Manager

As part of its international capacity building efforts to improve burn rehabilitation, Sunshine not only organizes training programs in Taiwan and abroad, but also regularly welcomes international professionals interested in learning more about burn rehabilitation and Sunshine’s service model.

In March, Sunshine welcomed Elissa who is completing her Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy in California. Elissa wanted to learn more about Sunshine’s community-based service model and the role played by occupational therapists.

During a one-day visit at Sunshine’s Rehabilitation Center in Taipei, she was able to observe how therapists arrange daily living training for burn survivors (for example, to regain the ability to use public transportation independently) and the attention to detail that goes into planning. She also learned about the effort that goes into planning individual service plans (ISP) for each burn survivor that not only takes into consideration physical rehabilitation needs, but also psychological and social adaptation needs, with needs and goals expressed by burn survivors themselves. This visit was also a learning opportunity for Sunshine’s therapists who were able to discuss the different service approaches in Taiwan and the US.

Improving burn rehabilitation worldwide and giving burn survivors access to these services is part of Sunshine’s mission and to do so, disseminating burn-related knowledge through various methods and means is crucial. Whether it’s a short study visit or a more comprehensive training program, Sunshine is always eager to share its experience with counterparts around the world. Your continued support makes it possible. Now, with the April Little by Little Matching Campaign, you can maximize the impact of your support. From April 8 to April 12, this week-long campaign will be matching donations up to $50 at 50% with $50,000 in matching funds and $5,000 in bonus prizes.
