Graduates of the Organics for Orphans course Emmanuel (WOW 5) and Yonah, Joshua and Dan (WOW 6) have been sharing their knowledge from the course over the past few months. More recently Emmanuel has been training the new WOW 7 members on how to make Keyhole Gardens. FAO describes Keyhole Gardens in the following way - "Compared to regular vegetable gardens, keyhole gardens require less labour (ideal for elderly, children or sick persons), less water and no costly fertilizers or pesticides. They act like an organic recycling tank, using food and garden waste as fuel to grow vegetables". Currently Emmanuel with the WOW 7 members are making 3 keyhole gardens for the Proud Mums. This will mean that the mothers will have vegetables to take home daily to improve the nutrition of themselves and their children.
Emmanuel and Dennis (Agricultural trainer and also a graduate of Organics for Orphans course) have also been preparing the gardens at Edwina Gateley House and the gardens next door at St Martins for planting. As the rains have come now is the time for planting of the various vegetables which the young people use for cooking their meals. Thankfully Kitale hasn't been hit by the devastating flooding in the same way much of Kenya has been.
Again on behalf of those who are benefiting from this project we would like to thank our GlobalGiving supporters. Without you we would not be in a position to help these young people.
Project reports on GlobalGiving are posted directly to globalgiving.org by Project Leaders as they are completed, generally every 3-4 months. To protect the integrity of these documents, GlobalGiving does not alter them; therefore you may find some language or formatting issues.
