Shaping more Deaf leaders for an inclusive Healthi

By Karina Martin | Director

In Zimbabwe, Deaf individuals often struggle to access vital Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) information due to communication barriers, as information dissemination typically overlooks their needs. Social media, a common information source, frequently lacks interpretable content for the Deaf, which leads to significant health knowledge gaps and a higher risk of preventable illnesses.

Nzeve is addressing this gap by training Deaf volunteer leaders from Manicaland's Deaf Clubs to educate their peers on SRH, thereby promoting healthier lifestyles within the Deaf community.

By the end of 2023, Nzeve had started training for five Deaf Leaders from Rusape, Mukwasa, Mutambara, and Chipinge, selected for their teamwork and sign language proficiency. The training included SRH education, leadership roles and responsibilities, and the benefits of being an SRH leader. Participants engaged with case studies and discussed leadership qualities with a Health Officer.

Emphasizing the importance of safeguarding policies, the training aimed to ensure the safety and well-being of participants in upcoming SRH sessions.

One participant shared their enthusiasm, saying, “I am grateful for this opportunity, I can learn more about SRH and also educate my other Deaf friends. I feel like a true Leader who is contributing to the deaf community.”

Nzeve takes pride in the dedication and enthusiasm of these new Deaf Leaders, whose initiative is a step towards empowering the Deaf community. With the sustained support from donors and partners, Nzeve is determined to continue fostering the Deaf community's potential and advocating for equal health access.

Your support is crucial to this mission, and we thank you for helping to empower Deaf leaders in Zimbabwe, creating a positive and lasting impact within the Deaf community.
