How Lydie Escaped Sexual Assault
We recently heard from one of the students in our Aumazo Tutoring Program. Lydie was confronted with a sad reality of life and one of the bigger challenges facing girls and women in societies across the globe. In her case, she was presented with options and had to make a difficult choice between fears that could destroy her or true love that would sustain her.
The tutoring had concluded that day at the scheduled hour of 6pm. Thereafter, Lydie went out to finish a group project with her classmates. She walked back home alone. Halfway through, two boys who were hiding in the bush by the roadside jumped out and attempted to rape her.
“At that moment, my life flashes in front of me. I remembered a discussion we had in our sexuality class about childbirth and knew that I had to overcome my fear and fight for my life. I just didn’t want to become pregnant and endure the pain of childbirth. I am not ready for that life now. I want to study and build a better future for myself before deciding on my own to have a baby.” Lydie said. “I kicked and yelled and did not let the fear paralyze me. A bystander heard my cry and came to the rescue.” Lydie recounted.
The Importance of Sexuality Education
Last year, we hired a part-time sexuality teacher in response to a growing demand. He was back by popular demand during the 2019-2020 academic year. He is one of the most requested teachers in the program. Lydie successfully defended herself thanks to the tools you afforded her and the defense strategy that your gift had allowed her to learn in the program.
The decision to hire a sexuality teacher arose after three of our students became pregnant and were having babies by the end of the 2017-2018 academic year. We took care of the mothers-to-be to the best of our ability and helped them carry their pregnancies to term. We understood, however, our shortcomings and took preventive health measures to lessen the emotional, financial and psychological damage on girls and the financial burden on their parents. The hiring of the sexuality teacher proved to be the best intervention and a cost-effective way to empower girls and teach them how to identify and treat potential health issues or hazards before they occur or worsen.
Your Gifts For Insight to Lydie
Your unprecedented support, and especially your donations, has given Aumazo this creative hedge. We really recognize that without your financial support, the particular way that Lydie learned how to get herself out of a sticky situation would never have happened.
We honestly want you to know that this is a result of your generosity. Everything boils down to money. One can have all the great ideas in the world but without the financial resources to turn them into concrete actions, they will just end up in the cemetery of ideas.
Donate on #GivingTuesday For More Impact
Your exceptional kindness is working wonders for Aumazo programs. We invite you to partner with us again this #GivingTuesday to create many of these positive feedbacks. @GlobalGiving is giving away $500,000 in matching funds to its nonprofit community members. How much we earn depends on how much you give!
Together, last year #GivingTuesday, we raised a total of $7,686 including $1,138 in matching funds from 25 donors. Donate this year and let’s beat that record by winning a big share of the half of million USD from @GlobalGiving and continue creating these positive results. Lydie did not let fear destroy her when she was attacked. She chose true love that sustained her and gave her the strength to fight back and win. We trust that on #GivingTuesday next Tuesday December 3rd, 2019, with your donations, you will send a strong message to Lydie’s attackers by standing with her.
Again a special thank you to you and all our donors. Happy Giving Season!
