Independence Day Celebrations

As the new school term kicks off at SMB Fatima Jinnah Government Girls School (SMB) and Khatoon-e-Pakistan Government Girls School (KPS), both proudly supported by Zindagi Trust since 2007 and 2015 respectively, our students are returning with renewed energy and excitement for the year ahead. But before we dive into the new term, let's take a moment to celebrate the diverse achievements and enriching experiences from the final quarter of the 2023-2024 academic year.

On April 20, the Mayor of Karachi, Mr. Murtaza Wahab, and the Deputy Commissioner-South visited SMB to launch a crucial polio eradication campaign on campus. This visit highlighted the community’s dedication to safeguarding our children and working towards a polio-free future for Pakistan, which along with Afghanistan, is regrettably the only nation left in the global community currently reporting cases of wild poliovirus.

On April 27, SMB students proudly represented the institution at an inter-school chess tournament organized by Haque Academy. Competing against students from the host school and other renowned private schools including Cedar School, Beaconhouse, Karachi Grammar, CAS School and Date Palm School, SMB was uniquely positioned as the only government school in the entire tournament. Our students excelled in the Under-10 category, securing 2nd place out of 36 participants, and secured 7th place in the Under-13 category among 28 players. Our 2nd place champion was awarded a trophy and certificate for her outstanding performance, while all school participants received certificates of excellence for their brilliant effort and participation.

In mid-May, KPS students from KG1-KG2 and Grades 3-8 had the exciting opportunity to embark on an educational field trip to the Maritime Museum in Karachi. This visit offered a rich blend of fun and learning as students delved into the fascinating world of maritime history. The Maritime Museum, located near the Karachi harbor, is dedicated to showcasing the maritime heritage of Pakistan and the broader history of seafaring. It features a diverse collection of exhibits, including historical ship models, navigational instruments, and artifacts from various naval expeditions. The museum’s interactive displays and immersive exhibits provide insights into the evolution of maritime technology and the significance of the sea in global trade and exploration.

The museum's exhibits are designed to captivate and educate young minds, offering a hands-on learning experience that complements classroom education. This field trip allowed students to connect classroom concepts with real-world applications, deepening their understanding of history, geography and science. The Maritime Museum's educational programs and exhibits are aimed at inspiring curiosity about the sea and its role in human history. By visiting, students at KPS gained valuable knowledge and a greater appreciation for maritime heritage, making it a memorable and enriching experience.

The SMB futsal team made a remarkable impact at the inaugural Futsal Cup 2023-2024, advancing to the semi-finals with an impressive performance at the Legend Arena. Futsal, a fast-paced variant of soccer played on a smaller, hard court, demands skillful play and quick decision-making and our team’s success at this tournament underscores their dedication and expertise in this dynamic sport. Among our standout students is the captain of both the SMB football and futsal teams. Alongside five other Grade 9-10 football players, she has embarked on an exceptional journey with the Diya Women’s Football Club during the 2023-2024 season. In June, the Diya Club had the honor of meeting international football stars such as Michael Owen, Pascal Chimbonda, Raúl Rodríguez, and Emile Heskey at the British High Commission in Karachi. Through their involvement with the club, our students competed in the First All-Pakistan Women’s Futsal Cup and proudly secured 3rd place.

Our six-day Summer Camp in early June was truly a highlight of the season, offering students a week filled with enriching learning experiences and ample opportunities to forge new friendships. This vibrant program was designed to engage young minds and provide a range of activities that fostered both personal and academic growth. One of the standout features of the camp was the series of engaging robotics workshops led by Tinker Bell Labs. These workshops were meticulously crafted to spark students' curiosity and enthusiasm for technology. Through hands-on activities, students explored the fundamentals of robotics, including programming, mechanical design and problem-solving. The experience enhanced their technical skills and encouraged creativity and teamwork.

The camp also featured a variety of other activities, such as arts and crafts, sports and interactive science experiments all aimed at providing a well-rounded experience. Each day was carefully structured to balance educational content with fun, ensuring that students remained engaged and excited throughout the week. Additionally, the camp created a supportive environment where students could collaborate, share ideas and build lasting friendships. The diverse range of activities helped students discover new interests and develop a variety of skills, from critical thinking to interpersonal communication. We are thankful to everyone who supported the summer camp activities.

On June 5, KPS had the distinct honor of hosting a delegation of students and project staff from the Kiran Foundation, accompanied by the group’s remarkable founder, Ms. Sabina Khatri. The Kiran Foundation is renowned for its dedicated efforts to provide transformational education and holistic support to children from underserved communities in Lyari and surrounding areas. Their mission focuses on empowering children and families through educational initiatives, healthcare services and community development programs. During their visit, the Kiran Foundation students engaged with our founder and President, Mr. Shehzad Roy, as part of the Passion Express initiative. This program is designed to inspire and motivate students by connecting them with influential leaders and changemakers who share their experiences and insights. Through interactive sessions and discussions, the initiative aims to provide students with valuable life lessons, encourage personal growth and ignite a passion for learning and community service. The visiting students were given a tour of our campus, including exposure to our school counselor's office, the new music center and vibrant art room, providing them with a comprehensive view of the various facilities that support our students' holistic development.

In late June, Students from SMB were provided an exciting opportunity to participate in an 8-day IBA Summer Math School, organized by STEAM Pakistan and hosted at the IBA Campus. This prestigious program is designed to immerse students in advanced mathematical concepts through a combination of hands-on activities and collaborative learning. The IBA Summer Math School offered a dynamic learning environment where students were exposed to a variety of mathematical topics that extend beyond the standard curriculum. During the program, participants engaged in interactive workshops and problem-solving sessions that challenged them to apply mathematical theories in practical scenarios.

Students worked closely with experienced instructors and mentors from IBA, gaining insights into advanced mathematical techniques and problem-solving strategies. The program fostered teamwork through group projects and collaborative exercises, encouraging students to discuss and solve complex problems together. This collaborative approach helped students develop critical thinking skills, enhanced their ability to work effectively in teams and boosted their confidence to tackle challenging mathematical concepts. The Summer Math School not only enhanced the students' understanding of mathematical concepts, but also sparked their enthusiasm for learning. The experience provided them with valuable skills and knowledge that will benefit their academic pursuits and future endeavors.

Before the academic term commenced, we organized an engaging and informative orientation session for the parents of our newly admitted Early Childhood Education (ECE) students at SMB and at KPS. These sessions were key opportunities to warmly welcome families and introduce them to our educational community. The orientations provided a comprehensive overview of our school’s educational philosophy and approach. We shared insights into our curriculum, teaching methodologies, and the various programs designed to support the holistic development of our students. Parents had the chance to learn about the resources and support systems available, including our dedicated faculty, specialized staff and enrichment programs.

Additionally, the sessions were designed to foster open communication between parents and our school teams. This collaborative approach ensures that parents feel informed and involved in their children’s educational journey from the very beginning. By emphasizing our commitment to nurturing each child's academic, emotional and social growth, we aim to build a strong partnership with our families. This alignment between home and school helps create a supportive environment where students can thrive. The orientations also included a tour of the school facilities, allowing parents to familiarize themselves with our learning spaces, including classrooms, the library and recreational areas. Overall, the sessions were designed to make parents feel welcomed, informed and confident in the educational experience their children will receive, setting a positive tone for the upcoming academic year.

Finally, at the conclusion of summer break, we kicked off the new academic year on August 14 with a vibrant celebration of Independence Day at both schools, marking the 77th anniversary of our nation's independence. The festivities were filled with patriotic fervor, featuring inspiring speeches by our students, faculty, school management and Zindagi Trust’s CEO, Amina Mazhar. Traditional songs, flag-hoisting ceremonies and colorful displays further instilled a deep sense of national pride among students and staff.

Following this, KPS hosted a special celebration to commemorate Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai Day on August 23. This event paid homage to the rich heritage of Sindh by highlighting the contributions of the legendary Sufi poet. The celebration included evocative poetry readings, soulful music performances and engaging cultural festivities. Through these activities, students explored Bhittai’s timeless wisdom and connected more deeply with their cultural roots. Both events not only united our school community, but also nurtured a profound sense of cultural awareness and pride among our students. These occasions provided meaningful opportunities for students to reflect on their heritage and embrace the values of patriotism and cultural appreciation.

Reflecting on these remarkable achievements and enriching experiences, we are proud to continue offering a diverse range of academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities that our students eagerly embrace. From academic enrichment and creative arts to sports and leadership programs, these opportunities are designed to nurture every aspect of our students' growth. At Zindagi Trust, we are committed to delivering a holistic education and are excited to continue enhancing our students' lives through these varied activities. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our supporters and partners; your generous contributions and unwavering support make these transformative initiatives possible. Your continued donations will help us further expand these opportunities, ensuring that every child has the chance to thrive. Together, we are not only educating, but also empowering our children to build a brighter future. Thank you for your ongoing support.
