Dear friends,
Our team is currently onsite for orchard plantings with the Catawba Nation near South Carolina, where we are planting a mix of native and naturalized fruit trees including apples, peaches, plums, American persimmon, pawpaw, elderberries, blueberries, and serviceberries.
This is our second trip to Catawba, as after planting orchards with the community last year, we were asked to return to expand access to fresh fruit and learning opportunities by planting more trees.
The first orchard at Black Snake Farm was planted last Friday (April 21) with 38 trees and new irrigation to ensure they are watered adequately during their critical establishment period this summer.
The second orchard - consisting of 10 trees and 20 berries - was planted yesterday (April 24) with the help of local and community volunteers at the Catawba Senior Center, which will provide nutritious food and a beautiful outdoor space for senior tribal members to relax and enjoy. Both projects included support and volunteers from TIAA and Earth Day Network, resulting in a great partnership to support tribal food sovereignty and well-being.
These are just two of the many tribal orchard projects happening this year as part of our Trees for Tribes program. Stay tuned throughout the summer on GlobalGiving and our social media channels (see links below) for more regular updates from the field!
