It has been 5 months since we posted our project to save Tsagnoria School on Global Giving and we have received over £500. We are incredibly grateful to those who have donated to the project thus far.
We and the beneficiaries really appreciate your support, especially those who have signed up for a regular donation to this project. We are also seeking funding from foundations and other funders and will keep you updated if any of these avenues are successful!
Your contributions are extremely important to helping repair the school and create a healthy, productive learning environment for the children. The money raised so far will provide 20 aluminium roof sheets to shelter the students when it rains and 5 desks and benches which will provide work space and seating for 20 students. The roof sheets will be greatly welcomed by students and teachers alike, because it means school won't be cancelled as a result of rain cascading through the dilapidated roof and textbooks won't be destroyed by frequent floods. The building of desks and benches for the children will be hugely beneficial because currently, if they are not one of the lucky ones to get a space at 1 of the 4 desks at the school then they must sit hunched over their books on the concrete floor. This severely hinders their ability to learn and remain engaged but "being able to sit up, will raise their minds up and keep them motivated", as said by Patrice, a teacher at the school, who desperately wants these improvements.
To reach our target of providing 40 desks and benches, constructing 2 separate classrooms, repairing the walls and replacing the leaking roof, we still need to raise over £4000 more. The lack of national investment in Madagascar’s education sector and the on-going political crisis has shown no signs of improvement. The Anosy region, where Tsagnoria is located, is one of the most poverty-stricken and vulnerable parts of Madagascar. 1 in 2 children have never been to school and over 2 in 3 have not completed primary education. This situation contributes to perpetuating a poverty cycle. The community of Tsagnoria are not able to fix the school on their own. It is only through us helping them repair their school, with your support, that the quality of education in Tsagnoria can drastically improve.
Azafady wants to say a huge thank you to everyone for the donations so far and continues to respectfully ask for donations to help repair Tsagnoria School. A small donation of £7 ($12) will provide one bag of cement to render the walls and £16 ($25) will provide one blackboard and a year’s supply of chalk. We want to give the children of Tsagnoria a school to be proud of. Thank you for your support.
