Tsharka Elementary/Middle School has successfully completed its twentieth year of teaching students in their home village!
This year presented special challenges. Following the serious earthquake in Nepal on November 3, 2023, our School Coordinator reported, “Tsharka is safe. The earthquake did not make any damages to the people and buildings in Dolpo, including Tsharka. We felt the the tremor very strong but nothing happened. Our students are all well.“
Tsharka School completed its 2023 summer session at the end of October, and the students took their ten-day fall vacation starting on November 1. The two month-long winter school session resumed on November 12. In addition to our long-time experienced teachers Thupten and Tse-wangmo, we hired two teachers from Tinje for the winter school. Our recently-completed passive solar classroom buildings make it possible for our students to study comfortably during the harsh winter conditions in the Himalayan mountains.
Our students in grades 8 and 9 will attend school during the winter months in Kathamandu. Our School Coordinator traveled to Kathmandu with those students.
Since the first school sessions held in a tent in 2003, over the past twenty years we have made continuing, significant progress at Tsharka School. We look forward to another successful school year in 2024!
