Neutralizing your carbon footprint is easy!

By Robin Van Loon | Executive Director, Camino Verde

"On every flight to New York and back, each traveller emits about 1.2t of CO2, using Department for Transport figures." (Source: here.)

More and more people are becoming aware of the impact of so many actions that we take for granted: driving a car, taking a flight, leaving the refrigerator door open longer than necessary.  We each find our own ways to reduce our impact, while at the same time taking steps to absorb or off-set some of the carbon dioxide we produce.

Camino Verde has sought to develop a carboon footprint win/win, in which neutralizing one's carbon footprint provides additional benefits.  And so "Turning carbon footprints into healthy soils" was born.  We use waste charcoal dust from artisanal wood charcoal production as a soil input, improving soil quality while creating a stable carbon "sink", with CO2 captured in the soil for hundreds or even thousands of years.  Charcoal meanwhile helps the soil to retain nutrients, especially important in the tropics where vital minerals and organic matter are leached out by intense rains.

Please spread the word!  And the next time you fly, consider making a contribution to offset your flight.  We thank you for your support of this important work.
