Coconut seedlings ready for transport
Dear All Friends,
Greetings and thank you very much for your kind donation to our project to re-plant and rehabilitate coconuts damaged during typhoon Haiyan. This project is important and the problem is that very few organizations are giving importance to re-plant damaged coconuts. There is also a lack of coconut tree seedlings and during this period we tap our main seedling nursery in Mindanao in order to procure coconut tree seedlings. We have a big truck that can transport 2,000 seedlings per trip and we are using this. We are also linking-up with the Philippine Coconut Authority for possible assistance from them for this very urgent and important initiative.
Hoping for your continuing support.
Very sincerely yours,
Cora

Coconut seedling ready to replant
Dear Friends,
Thank you very much for your support to our project to replant the coconut trees damaged by the typhoon here. We are indeed very grateful as so very few are doing this. Other organizations are more focused on short term activities with results can be visible in 1-2 months. Re-planting coconuts is another case since we get results only in 7 long years and impact evaluation could not readily be seen. But this has to be done since coconuts are one of the main crops here. This reporting period, we are able to distribute a total of 350 seedlings good for 3.5 hectares in Barangay Mahayahay, Ormoc City with one hectare can be planted with 100 trees with a distance of 10 meters x 10 meters. Our coconut seedling nursery located in Barangay Talisayan,
Albuera Municipality is also producing 1,500 coconut seedlings with initial seeds we got from municipalities in the southern part of Leyte not severely damaged by the typhoon.
Thank you once again for your continuing support.
Very sincerely yours,
Cora

Planting between coconut trees

Mix planting
Dear Friends,
Greetings from Leyte. Our coconut replanting program is continuing and at present we are able to distribute a total of 1,700 coconut seedlings to farmers. The farmers themselves dig the hole where the trees are to be planted as well as provide for organic fertilizer coming from animal waste in the farm. Except in some areas, most of the coconuts are growing well and our mortality rate is tolerable at 5 percent.
The planting distance of coconuts is 10 meters x 10 meters and we are doing planting of high-valued fruit and timber trees as well as bananas and bamboo in between the coconut rows. This is so that we will maximize the land. Most of the landholding here is small at average 1.5 hectares and there is really a need to improve farming systems. Traditionally farmers plant only coconuts and nothing else and when the coconuts were destroyed by high-velocity winds during the typhoon, there are no other sources of income and food.
Our approach of mix planting will be a model here in Leyte and we will use this in order to demonstrate to other farmers how they can maximize their land.
Hoping for more support from you.
Very sincerely yours,
Cora
