Dear Friends,
We are continuing with the home-building and home repair initiative for survivors of Typhoon Haiyan. in Leyte we have done already a total of 77 new homes and repaired 345. The repairs are mostly replacement of walls made of tarp and plastic to a more permanent one and made with bamboo mats. Bamboo mats is our choice because it is tough and withstand warping due to rain. Then we are able also to utilize local bamboo product earning an income by the farmers and the artisans making the mats earning income too. I hope that this approach will be utilized by the agencies more and more rather than bringing plastic as shelter kit and distribute it to the beneficiaries.
This week we will be moving to Borongan in Samar to continue with the home-building activities as the problem there is compounded double because of the devastation of the most recent Typhoon Ruby which hits the area hard. We have already finished our assessment for Borongan and I will submit update in next report.
Hoping for more support from you.
Very sincerely yours,
Cora
