Udhiyah/Qurbani for Orphans and IDPs in Nigeria

BACKGROUND ON THE PROJECT LOCATION:

Shinkafi local government area is among the highly affected areas of banditry in Zamfara State. Communities around this area were highly terrorized by bandits. Due to these reckless and rampant attacks to the communities, there has been significant displacement of its population. As a result, many families are facing severe food shortages, which have led to malnutrition among the displaced people. The Foundation deems it necessary to intervene in the plight of this affected population.

Our organization therefore found it necessary to intervene and provide a solution to this problem by distributing the food items to the IDPs and the Orphans in thhe area with the aim of checkmating the hunger that is affecting the IDPs and orphans in the area.

The distribution of the food items was conducted on Thursday, 10^th August, 2023 to the IDPs of the Local Government. Thus the project supposed to be held before this date, but was postponed due to logistics and financial delays. The project was implemented by the organization's Program Office on Orphans and IDPs.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The project was designed, implemented, and funded by HUCOMDEF through GlobalGiving fundraising efforts. The project was supervised by Program office on Orphans and IDPs.

The project was designed to help and  provide immediate food assistance to 130 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Shinkafi, Zamfara State, Nigeria, by distributing essential food items such as Rice, Maize, and Palm Oil. The primary goal is to alleviate hunger and improve the nutritional status of vulnerable IDPs who have been displaced due to banditry.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The project implementation was based on the designed objectives of the project, these objectives are;

1. To provide immediate food assistance to 100 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Shinkafi, Zamfara State, Nigeria, by distributing essential food items such as Rice, Maize, and Palm Oil.
2. To alleviate hunger and improve the nutritional status of vulnerable (IDPs who have been displaced due to banditry.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION METHODOLOGY:

The project was conducted in the following sequence:

      i.       Project Planning Meeting was held on 31^stJuly, 2023 in order to draw a plan for the proper implementation of the project.  

     ii.       Need Assessment: A comprehensive needs assessment was conducted on 2^nd August, 2023 in collaboration with local authorities and community based organizations to identify the location of IDPs camps, identify the exact number of IDPs and assess their immediate food needs.

  ii.          Procurement: The purchase of the said items was carried out on 8^th August, 2023 by the Program Office responsible for the implementation of the project. The procured items are Rice, Maize, and Palm Oil from local suppliers to support the local economy while ensuring cost-effectiveness;

  iv.          Packaging and Transport: Proper arrangements were made for packaging and transportation of the procured food items to the distribution camp taking into account logistical challenges and ensuring timely delivery. 

    v.          Distribution Event: This event was held on on Thursday 10^th August, 2023 in a central location accessible to the IDPs. Prioritizing safety and fairness in the distribution process to avoid any potential conflict or confusion;

vi.           Monitoring and Accountability: During the implementation of this project, a monitoring system was adopted to track the distribution process and gather feedback from the beneficiaries. This will help us ensure transparency and accountability in the relief efforts.

CONCLUSION:

The primary goal is to alleviate hunger and improve the nutritional status of vulnerable IDPs who have been displaced due to banditry in the area through provision of immediate food assistance to 130 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Shinkafi, Zamfara State, Nigeria, by distributing essential food items such as Rice, Maize, and Palm Oil.

The project design and objectives were relevant. The project made a huge effort in helping the host community with food items that will help in improving their nutritional values. The methods applied by the program office in implementing the project were effective.

Conclusively, The distribution of food items to the IDPs of Shinkafi Local Government Area by HUCOMDEF made a giant effort in easing the curtailing the hunger to the IDPs  that is facing the community, also, the project checkmate the unnecessary hardship cause by hunger to the IDPs.
