Thank you for supporting Save the Children's Ukraine Crisis Regional Fund. Here is an update on our response to the ongoing crisis:
Response Priorities
As the war in Ukraine moves into its third year, active hostilities have left at least 14.6 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. Save the Children works countrywide in 21 oblasts, including in occupied territories where we are one of the few INGOs supporting children and their families.
As 2024 continues, our key response priorities include:
• Education: Help children access safe, uninterrupted and quality education;
• Child Protection: Protect children to ensure their well-being is nurtured;
• Mental Health and Psychological Support: Provide the emotional and psychosocial support children need to cope and heal amidst war;
• Cash Assistance: Ensure vulnerable families can meet their basic needs;
• Food Security and Livelihoods: Help families and youth restore livelihoods and their ability to invest in their own and children’s well-being;
• Water, Sanitation and Hygiene: Ensure families have access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities;
• Shelter and Non-Food Items: Protect displaced and war-affected families through housing repairs and distributions.
Challenges and Partnerships
Safe humanitarian access has been the main challenge in reaching those in greatest need of support in Ukraine. Humanitarian access has increased but, in areas with heavier shelling, civilians’ access to services is severely restricted.
Save the Children and partners have overcome incredible challenges to reach kids most in need. For example, we have coordinated with the United Nations, the Ukrainian government, neighboring country governments, local partners and many others to obtain access to communities under siege.
We're only able to navigate this conflict because of our partnerships with local and national actors. We know that, in emergencies, local and national actors are critical as they play a key role in rapidly delivering life-saving assistance. They’re also able to access communities others cannot, and are invaluable when it comes to linking response efforts to resilience building and long-term recovery.
In Ukraine, 40% of our funding directly supported 30 local organizations. In addition to funding, we provide training and technical support to strengthen local humanitarian efforts.
