Empowering the Ukrainian Diaspora through Training

By Sonia Agnesod | Planning, Coordination and Compliance

Thanks to your generous contributions, IOM Washington’s Diaspora Engagement Unit (DEU), in partnership with United Help Ukraine (UHU), delivered two powerful online trainings that deeply resonated with the Ukrainian diaspora across North America.

The first session, “Transitioning to Early Recovery,” held on April 15, helped diaspora members understand how to move from emergency aid to long-term recovery. Led by IOM Ukraine’s Livelihoods Unit, the training offered practical examples—like supporting small businesses and rebuilding infrastructure—to inspire sustainable change.

One participant shared: “The training gave me practical tools for designing community-driven recovery programs that can be adapted to local contexts, even from afar.”

Another added: “It helped bridge the gap between intention and impact in diaspora-led recovery efforts.”

The second training, “Protection and Counter-Trafficking Essentials,” held on May 7, opened many eyes to the realities of human trafficking in Ukraine. Participants learned how to protect their communities and share vital resources.

I didn’t know this was a big problem in Ukraine! Just learning about this was very eye-opening,” one attendee said.

“The helpline number is something I’ll definitely share with my family and friends,” said another.

Together, these sessions reached over 60 participants from cities like D.C., Philadelphia, Florida, and Toronto.

Your support made this possible—and it’s making a real difference in how diaspora communities engage, protect, and rebuild.

Thank you for standing with Ukraine. Your impact is felt every day.
