VTSPC Symposium + Umatter for Schools

By Heather Thomas | Director of Marketing and Development

In July 2023, the Center for Health and Learning (CHL) welcomed Heather Thomas to our team as the new Director of Marketing and Development. Heather is from Southern Vermont and joins us with decades of experience in fundraising, non-profit service, finance, and entrepreneurship.

CHL catalyzes initiatives that inspire optimal health for all.  Our mission is to build healthy communities through educational resources, leadership training, policy development, and technical assistance.  CHL is focused on improving school and community health.  Our staff and consultants apply expertise in health and education to design training, develop resources, and conduct research and evaluation as leaders in suicide prevention, mental wellness promotion, and substance use prevention - using both a public health model and a medical model alongside one another.

One of the programs that the CHL runs is the Vermont Suicide Prevention Center (VTSPC)*, a statewide resource fostering a sustainable approach to suicide prevention in Vermont. In September, CHL and VTSPC will host the 10th Annual Vermont Suicide Prevention Symposium to bring together some of the thought leaders in Vermont and beyond in the prevention and postvention conversation.

In the coming weeks, CHL will release the 2023 Vermont Suicide Prevention Platform, a collaborative effort across public and private agencies informed by data-driven, evidence-based practices that will serve as a resource across the state for educational and health institutions.

CHL and VTSPC continue to offer training specifically for the youth of Vermont. On October 3, our team will present our Umatter ® for Schools program aimed at addressing the needs of at-risk youth in the state.

*The VTSPC is publicly funded through an allocation from the Vermont Department of Mental Health, the lead state agency for suicide prevention in Vermont.  The Vermont Department of Mental Health oversees all activities funded through this allocation.
