Dear Supporters,
Every year 6.4 million tonnes of plastic is dumped into the ocean, a horrifying statistic when you think about it. The effects it has on marine life is devastating and if we don’t look after our ocean and better understand the intricacies entailed then our beloved ocean is doomed.
In honour of Sara King, who was dedicated to the research of plastics, this project is to continue the research and protection of our oceans by providing scholarships. At the beginning of the year prior to COVID-19 we had scholars ready to start the program but unfortunately with countries implementing travel restrictions to reduce the spread of the virus, it has slowed down the progress of the project.
There is light at the end of the tunnel as we’ve adapted and introduced a virtual program too. A lot of positives can be taken from this as funding for a scholarship for the virtual program would be £695 for duration of 4-8 weeks whereas in country it would be £3000 to fund a scholar. This opens up the door of opportunity to many candidates who may have had challenges with gaining visas and other expenses.
Once travel bans have been lifted we are looking forward to collaborating with one of our partners who are looking to set up a vessel to give scholars a hands on interdisciplinary experience and hone their marine biology expertise and skills with global partnerships.
The GVI Trust is so grateful for any donations to support this project during these difficult times. Your contribution would make a huge difference directly in our beneficiaries' lives and at the same time looking after marine life.
With Gratitude,
Sara King Scholarship Fund
