Dear Global Givers,
We are delighted to share an update with you on our boarding scholars, Kiran* and Pooja* (names changed), who are making remarkable strides despite their challenging circumstances. During the past three months, both scholars went home to spend their summer vacations with their respective families. Despite challenges, both young women continue to show immense resilience and determination in their pursuit of education and personal growth.
Pooja's Progress Update:
Pooja has faced significant challenges from her family since starting her studies. Her sister was initially against her pursuing education, and the slightest indication that she has a male friend places her at risk of being coerced into commercial sex work and sent to Mumbai. Her brother also opposes her education, viewing it as a threat to a potential source of income for the family. The summer vacation wasn’t easy on her but she has not allowed that to distract her from continuing to pursue her dreams. In response to these threats, Pooja is certain to seek police assistance if anyone from her family comes in the way of her right to study at her university.
The danger of being taken to Mumbai is particularly acute, as it could mean being forced to work in a dance bar, with the risk of further exploitation. Despite these pressures, Pooja remains resilient and determined to continue her education.
Currently in her first year of university, Pooja is also considering preparing for the CAT (Common Admission Test) to pursue further studies. Amidst her struggles, she found time to participate in a cultural festival at her university.
Kiran's Progress Update:
As mentioned in the last report, Kiran* was recovering from surgery to remove nodes caused by tuberculosis (TB). However, one day in the past three months, she experienced excruciating pain and immediately visited her doctor. Kiran ultimately underwent surgery for a breast tumour in Mumbai, following an earlier operation in Jaipur that did not fully eliminate the tumour, which later spread to her other breast. Fortunately, the recent surgery was successful, and while further treatment may be necessary, she is recovering well.
Emotionally, Kiran has received counselling and support, helping her overcome a period of depression and regain her motivation. She is currently staying with her aunt and uncle, who are providing her with the care she needs during this time.
Despite her health challenges, Kiran has been diligent about her education. She sent her medical reports to her university, ensuring her attendance remains on track. She is preparing to sit for her 12th-grade exams in December and is focused on her board exam, a crucial final high school exam. Kiran remains determined and is working towards her dream of becoming a model.
We are incredibly proud of Kiran and Pooja for their strength and courage. Your continued support has been instrumental in providing them with the opportunity to pursue their dreams despite the hardships they face. Thank you for standing by them on this journey.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Team iPartner India
