Exactly two years ago, eight veterinary students from the University of Pretoria received life changing news: we were chosen to be the new committee for a project that has been running since 1993. In 30 years, a legacy was built, hundreds of lives impacted, many kilometers traveled, and relationships formed. To be chosen to continue with the success of this project, was a massive responsibility, but great honour.
In two years, we learned many lessons, gained perspective, worked hard, got frustrated, but stood up and kept trying our best - for the sake of other veterinary students in Africa. Our eyes were opened to see in what a privilege position we are to be able to pursue our dreams with all the necessary resources. We were in awe of how our future colleagues in different countries pursue their dreams with determination and grit. We first hand experienced the gratefulness of all the recipients of Vet Books For Africa donations, and heard stories of how this project has been impacting lives for 30 years.
In our term as committee members for this project, we traveled about 15 000 kilometres through 6 countries: Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya and Botswana. In total we visited 7 universities, 6 schools or charity organisations and donated over 300 textbooks, 17 boxes or equipment and 7000 stationery units. We connected with so many like-minded people who share the same passion as us and strive to promote the same concept as us: conservation through education.
We have received 68 applications for the 2025/2026 committee. After many interviews and challenging decisions, we chose the next eight students who we believe will take Vet Books For Africa to the next level.
As always, thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of our term. We wish the new committee all the best and are excited to follow along and support your journey.
