Village Bicycle Project for 100 Rural Mothers

by Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research Ltd/Gte
Village Bicycle Project for 100 Rural Mothers

Summary

In many rural Nigerian villages, mothers walk long distances to reach markets, clinics, and schools. This takes hours daily, reduces time for childcare and income activities, and affects health. Our project will provide 100 bicycles to rural mothers, along with basic repair kits and training. With bicycles, travel time can drop by 60%, giving mothers safer, faster access to healthcare, food supply points, and schools for their children. This project brings practical relief to families in need.

Challenge

Rural mothers often walk more than 10 km daily to reach health centers, schools, or local markets. Without transport, pregnant women face higher risks during emergencies, children miss school, and families lose hours of productive time. Unsafe and exhausting travel prevents mothers from securing food, income, and education opportunities. The lack of affordable and safe transport keeps families trapped in cycles of poverty and poor health.

Solution

We will distribute 100 bicycles to rural mothers, along with repair kits and safety lessons. Each mother will be able to travel faster and carry goods more easily. A community repair point will be set up so bicycles stay in use for years. With reliable transport, mothers can reach markets, schools, and clinics in less time, improving family health, food security, and children's school attendance. This simple solution removes barriers caused by distance.

Long-Term Impact

With bicycles, rural mothers can save up to 15 hours weekly, time that can be invested in income activities and childcare. Families gain more consistent access to food, medical care, and education. The project builds lasting benefits as bicycles continue serving households for years, while trained mechanics keep them in use. Over time, the bicycles will strengthen family livelihoods, reduce health risks, and expand educational access for children in rural villages.
