Dream Learn Work 8th Report on GlobalGiving

By Jhonantan Mier | Project Coordinator

1st general meeting with partner NGOs
1st general meeting with partner NGOs

DLW is a Norwegian NGO, and our mission is to give brazilian young adults, from less developed areas, fair opportunities for a better future, through education and employment.

Introduction

Many new features from the second quarter of Dream Learn Work. Several events and memorable moments continue happening with our organization and we will update them here for you. Enjoy!

APRIL

Partner NGOs Meeting

The 1st General Meeting with the partner NGOs of DLW, in 2019, took place on a sunny day in Itaboraí, at the headquarters of Abrigo Rainha Sílvia. It was attended by representatives of all our social partner institutions.

The partner institutions that participated in this meeting were: Projeto Karanba (São Gonçalo), Projeto Grael (Niterói – Jurujuba), Instituto Bola Pra Frente (Guadalupe), Abrigo Rainha Sílvia (Itaboraí), Instituto Rogerio Steinberg (Jardim Botânico) Luta Pela Paz/Fight for Peace (Maré). Our partner NGOs play a key role in DLW’s activities. It is with their help and collaboration that we are able to carry out our individual recruitments and follow-ups.

Good Deeds Day - Fair

Annually, DLW takes part in the international event Good Deeds Day, arranged in Brazil by Atados. This year’s NGO fair (RJ edition), was held on Sunday, April 7th, at Pq. Garota de Ipanema – an amazingly beautiful place for this type of event. Near one of the most famous beaches in the world! It was a great opportunity to promote our NGO and for general public and to understand the importance and impact of our social work and other organizations as well!

The fair is meant to be a bridge between volunteers and NGOs. People who would like to volunteer simply go around from stand to stand to learn about the different organizations and pick the one they find interesting or can identify themselves with. Then, they sign up and volunteer work for the NGOs through Atados’ website.

Fight for Peace - Recruitment

On April 15th, our DLW team visited our NGO partners at Fight for Peace, in Maré. In that opportunity, we carried out our first annual recruitment, as well as our individual follow-up of thel academic and professional trails of our active participants in the institution.

We were very happy to see the constant progress of our participants, the achievements and conclusion of several courses and, at the same time, the continued search for new knowledge technique and professional improvement.

Good Deeds Day - Action Day

During the week after the NGOs fair, all the NGOs that took part arrange social actions so that volunteers can participate in their work. DLW held a Good Deeds Day action on thursday, April 18, at Aterro do Flamengo, where we gathered interested volunteers representing various professions with our DLW participants, so they could exchange experiences and learn how to enter the labour market through your network.

Our work this year was supported by DLW veteran participants/volunteers who have already gone through more levels and qualifications with us and are currently in the job market and carrying out their own individual projects in their respective areas of activity. Their presence was fundamental to enrich the exchange of knowledge with the other volunteers and especially in motivating the continuity of the search for a better future through the education and employment of our current DLW participants.

MAY

Projeto Grael - Recruitment

On May 16th, on a sunny Tuesday, in the city of Niterói. Our DLW team went to Jurujuba to visit our NGO partners at Projeto Grael. The visit was to perform, in the morning, our individual follow-up with our active participants, see the current status of each one and make an evaluation of potential new courses.

Our Project Grael partners have some very interesting programs and aggregators for their participants. They have sports, professional and environmental programs. All focused on the nautical sector and following this emphasis of activities that are the focus of the organization itself.

Wood Group Visit

This month, our participants had the opportunity to visit the facilities in Rio de Janeiro of our corporate partner, Wood. The first visit was in their office in Barra da Tijuca and the second one happened in their factory in Macaé.

Wood is a high-performance multinational corporation in the oil and gas industry. It acts in more than 60 countries employing about 55,000 people. Ana Cecilia Xavier and Natália Silva, whom work in the HR, Communication & Social Responsibility areas, welcomed us. After a short introduction to the company and the oil and gas industry, they talked about their careers, job seeking, writing a curriculum vitae and about different job interviews situations.

Young apprentice in DNV GL

"I joined DNV GL in 2019. It has been very pleasurable and satisfying to be in a good working environment and doing what I like. My co-workers is also very important for me. They are always willing to help me with subjects that arise and help and teach me to do some tasks that I have not yet learned. It has been an exchange of experience and very enriching for me. Both professionally and in building my autonomy as a human being as well. I'm sure I'm on the right track," says Leandro Assis, DLW participant.

DNV GL has been with DLW since the start and shares DLW’s vision on how to include these adolescents in the maritime industry. “As one of the co-founders of DLW, DNV GL is glad to provide a work opportunity to one of DLW students. Leandro has joined us earlier this year, and it has been a very fulfilling experience for us. Not only because of Leandro’s excellent attitude, behaviors and commitment, but also to be able to help a young professional that worked really hard to get to this stage of his career. We are looking forward to replicating this positive experience in the future,” says Alex Imperial, VP, O&G South America.

JUNE

Nor-Shipping 2019

“It’s been an amazing experience to be at Nor-Shipping and Dream Learn Work has been able to connect with many new companies and people. The fair itself has had a huge focus on sustainability and that has really reflected the stands, not only in the Blue Economy Hall, but generally at the fair. The companies are more eager to help projects with sustainable solutions and we in Dream Learn Work have really felt that during the whole week. People are thinking more globally and are happy to help social projects on the other side of the world. Norwegians are understanding that we need to think global if we are going to have a change and the companies are taking action and responsibility,” says Jeanette Lorvik, General Manager of Dream Learn Work.

Graduation at Gastromotiva

Recently three participants completed their studies with Gastromotiva! The graduations were attended by many friends and family and took place on June 14 and 19 in the Refettorio Gastromotiva, a school-restaurant in Rio de Janeiro that fights waste and offers daily dinners for homeless people.

Our graduates Rute and Jéssica, recruted from our partner NGO, Abrigo Rainha Sílvia, graduated as professional cooks with an emphasis on social gastronomy, a course that teaches about the rescue and full use of food and daily preparation of dinners for homeless people, while Rafaella, recruted from our partner NGO Instituto Bola Pra Frente, graduated in the entrepreneurship course, in which those who are interested in having their own business learn about citizenship, marketing and packaging, as well as hygiene and food safety. Congratulations, girls!

Shipping Agent Day

June 24th was celebrated the Maritime/Shipping Agent Day in the Ports Captaincy of Rio de Janeiro!

SindaRio & Imapor hosted a brunch at the Captaincy that was attended by several authorities such as Mr. Captain of Ports, CMG André Luiz de Andrade Felix, President of the Maritime Tribunal, Vice-Admiral Wilson Pereira de Lima Filho and the Director of Ports and Coasts, Vice-Admiral Roberto Gondim. In addition to the authorities, the maritime agents of the companies associated with SindaRio were also present.

The event also had the presence of the students of the course Young Talents of Navigation, who made a musical presentation. The participation of the students helped them have direct contact with the maritime-port authorities and also with the agents, with many years of experience in this area.
