GlobalGiving VYLTP Report, January 2022

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR GENEROUS DONORS!

Since our last report, the omicron variant of Covid-19 was identified in South Africa and around the world, and South Africa began the fourth wave of Covid-19.  Luckily for us in the Western Cape, the timing was such that we managed to hold our last Taizé youth day for young adults in the Western Cape at the end of November, just before that fourth wave began. Attendance was thus a bit lower than usual, but the day was very meaningful for the group. The theme focused on Hope and workshop topics included Gender Based Violence, and meditation/prayer and our bodies.

We have now held four of these youth days and have identified a group of leaders who attend the night before to help with preparation and engage in community building. We will be exploring ways to develop their leadership this year.

Our very exciting development is the VYLTP container office and training room. During November, the Volmoed building staff engaged a team that included young men to build a deck around the container that more than doubled the space we can use.

This was a wonderful training opportunity for these young people. The result is beautiful, an asset to the Volmoed retreat centre. The Desmond Tutu HIV foundation generously donated six computers to us, and we are working out how to best use them.

We are also hugely excited to be finally holding an in-person planning weekend for our leadership team at the end of January.

Until now Covid-19 has prevented us from doing this safely. We will discern how best to run our VYLTP program in 2022, if or when we will continue our new online courses, and how we will use the computers for training opportunities for young people.

VYLTP has been closely connected with Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu, who gave our program his full support. We extend our deepest condolences to Mama Leah and the Tutu family. We celebrate this extraordinary global icon, giant of justice and faith and joy. We pledge to continue his legacy by striving to live out his values and work for transformation in our country and our world.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT AND ALL YOUR DONATIONS!

               WE APPRECIATE YOU!
