War Trauma Knows no Nationality

By Dr. Laila Risgallah Wahba | Project Leader

Children globally suffer a wide variety of traumatic events: natural disasters, war, accidents, being orphaned or being sold for sexual exploitation to name a few. When children experience any of these traumatic events, they also will experience major losses. Depending on the trauma, losses could include home and family, friends, safety, trust, education, self-respect, feelings of being loved, a sense of belonging, and, finally, hope.

These losses cause deep feelings of sadness within a child. It is important that children are given many opportunities to identify and express their feelings for emotional and spiritual healing to occur. Children also must be given time to process their losses and have them restored where possible. A mother who dies in a traumatic event cannot be brought back to life. A loving caregiver, however, can be provided, thus making the child feel safe and loved.

Not Guilty for Family Development in partnership with Crisis Care International present this training which deals with trauma issues in children including the impact of trauma on war children and foundational principles for intervention planning to restore healing and hope to these children. Two final sessions deal with the care of caregivers who are vulnerable to secondary traumatization as they care for children suffering from deep emotional wounds.

Training Objectives

This Training presents foundational issues and principles that provide caregivers with

  1. An understanding of children’s traumatic experiences and the resulting impact of trauma.
  2. Basic prerequisites to planning and implementing holistic interventions

This training also facilitates trainees’ learning in the following ways:

The trainee will

1.   Explore the situations of abuse and exploitation that millions of the world’s children confront daily.

  1. Identify the trauma and losses children suffer during these traumatic experiences and what this means in their lives.
  2. Understand the impact of trauma on children’s behavior that can lead to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
  3. Analyze how children view their trauma.
  4. Apply a flexible model of care for traumatized children
  5. Learn how to help caregivers plan holistic interventions that address the children’s needs physically, mentally, socially, emotionally, and spiritually, thus alleviating the effects of their trauma
  6. Become familiar with ways to ensure care for the caregivers, enabling them to remain healthy while working with traumatized children.

Not Guilty is implementing this raining to Sudanese and Eritrean refugees residing in Egypt.

This year, over 200 hundred refugees have gone through this training.

At the end of this training, they share what they have learned. Attached is one testimonial.
