Healing and Hope for Sudanese Refugees

By Dr. Laila Risgallah Wahba | Founder

Project Report: War Trauma: Recovery & Anti-Sexual Abuse Training - #64321

Introduction:
Over the past several months, Not Guilty has been working with Sudanese refugees in Egypt, providing a platform for healing and resilience through the "Seeing Through Trauma" workshop. This initiative aimed to explore the profound impact of war—not just the immediate violence, but the enduring echoes of loss that span generations.

Context: The Refugee Crisis in Egypt
Egypt has become a primary refuge for those fleeing the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Since April 2023, over 1.2 million Sudanese have sought safety in Egypt, with more than 600,000 registered with the UNHCR . The majority of these refugees are women and children, many of whom have experienced significant trauma. Despite Egypt's proximity and historical ties to Sudan, refugees often face challenges such as limited legal protection, restricted access to employment, and social discrimination. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudanese_refugees_in_Egypt?utm_source=chatgpt.com)

Not Guilty workshops provide a safe space for Sudanese refugees to share their stories of loss and resilience. Through storytelling, group discussions, and therapeutic activities, participants explore the multifaceted impacts of displacement and conflict on their lives.

One Example is on March 6 - 8, 2025:

Key Themes and Insights:

  • Acknowledging Grief and Trauma: Participants shared personal and collective experiences of loss—not only of homes and loved ones but also of childhood, safety, and a sense of normalcy.
  • Building Resilience: The workshop emphasized the strength required to rebuild and heal, focusing on the journey from pain to hope.
  • Empowerment through Healing: Healing was framed not as forgetting but as learning to live again, with participants exploring strategies for processing emotions and fostering self-confidence.
  • Unity and Support: The sense of community and mutual encouragement among participants highlighted their shared strength and determination to move forward.

Challenges Faced by Participants:

While the workshop provided a space for healing, participants continue to face significant challenges:

  • Legal and Economic Barriers: Many refugees lack legal status, limiting their access to employment, education, and healthcare. This restriction not only affects adults but also has a profound impact on their children, who struggle to access education and necessary health services, hindering their chances of a better future.
  • Psychosocial Strain: The ongoing uncertainty and trauma contribute to mental health challenges, including anxiety and depression. For many participants, the emotional toll of war and displacement extends to their children, who are often caught in the crossfire of this intergenerational trauma. The children of refugees frequently experience disrupted childhoods, with a lack of stability, security, and access to mental health support, which can result in developmental and emotional challenges as they grow.

These challenges underscore the urgent need for comprehensive support for both the adults and children in these communities to ensure that the next generation is not defined by the trauma of war, but is given the opportunity to heal, grow, and thrive.

Thank you for standing with us in this life-changing endeavor to continue to support these refugees with training, community, and counseling.
