Peace Restored in Alabek Payam: A Grassroots Triumph for Dialogue and Unity

South Sudan Grassroots Initiative for Development (SSGID) is honored to share a transformative story of healing and hope from the heart of Alabek Payam, Tonj North County, Warrap State—a community that has long been scarred by inter-communal violence but is now embracing peace, thanks to the tireless efforts of local peacebuilders and the unwavering commitment of SSGID.

From Conflict to Calm: The Rise of a Peace Movement

The Warrap State Youth Peace Talk Project, a bold initiative launched by SSGID in the face of deep-rooted conflict, has sparked a grassroots revolution in peacebuilding. At the center of this transformation is the Juer Peace and Reconciliation Committee, formed with the facilitation and mentorship of SSGID. Composed of courageous local leaders, elders, and intellectuals from once-warring communities, the committee was trained and empowered with tools for conflict resolution, mediation, and dialogue facilitation.

Only two months since its formation, the results are nothing short of miraculous—calm has returned to Alabek. Once a hotspot of deadly clashes and mutual suspicion, Alabek Payam is now experiencing unprecedented peace, community engagement, and hope.

The Turning Point: The Voice of Kur Bona

Among the many unsung heroes of this transformation is Kur Bona, a committed member of the Juer Peace and Reconciliation Committee. During a recent peace space dialogue hosted by SSGID, Kur became visibly emotional, sharing a personal reflection that moved everyone present.

“I never believed that dialogue could stop bloodshed. For years, I saw my community torn apart by hatred and revenge. I lost friends, witnessed destruction, and felt hopeless. But now, there is peace. No one is dying. No one is burning homes. We are talking. We are healing. And I thank all those who made this possible. From today, I commit myself to be a peace ambassador—not just for my community, but for all those across South Sudan who are still struggling with violence.”

Kur’s heartfelt testimony symbolizes the essence of the Warrap State Youth Peace Talk Project—real people, real change, and real peace.

A Celebration of Peace: Women Lead the Way

On December 18th, the women of the formerly divided communities came together in a powerful display of unity and resilience. Singing traditional songs, dancing in joy, and sharing emotional stories, these women celebrated more than just togetherness—they celebrated survival, solidarity, and a shared future. Their reunion, facilitated by SSGID, was a moment of healing for many who had suffered in silence and served as a powerful reminder that women are the heartbeat of peacebuilding in South Sudan.

Sustaining the Momentum: A Call to Action

The success in Alabek was achieved without any external funding—driven purely by the passion, dedication, and grassroots leadership of SSGID and the communities involved. But to sustain and expand this peace to other conflict-affected areas, we need your support.

Your contributions can:

  • Train more peace committee members like Kur Bona.
  • Facilitate community dialogues and healing spaces.
  • Provide logistical and technical support for grassroots peace initiatives.
  • Empower women and youth to take leadership roles in reconciliation processes.

A Vision for the Future

The experience in Alabek Payam proves that peace is not just a dream—it is achievable, replicable, and sustainable when communities are empowered and supported. With your partnership, SSGID aims to scale this model across Warrap State and beyond, reaching communities still trapped in cycles of violence.

Let the story of Kur Bona, the Juer Peace and Reconciliation Committee, and the brave women of Alabek inspire us all to believe in the power of dialogue, the strength of local leadership, and the possibility of peace in South Sudan.
