A Summer of Growth

Friends,

With your support, CREATE! has continued to demonstrate its remarkable impact on the communities it serves. This summer brought remarkable rewards. Through our sustainable initiatives in gardening, poultry production, and water resource management, we helped more rural communities combat food insecurity, strengthen local economies, and improve their overall quality of life. The experiences of community members, coupled with our key performance indicators, illustrate the positive impact this project has had on the ground.

To start, I would like to introduce you to Coumba, a dedicated member of the Keur Birame community. A few years ago, Keur Birame faced numerous challenges, particularly when it came to accessing healthy and varied vegetables. The villagers, reliant on subsistence farming and livestock, struggled to diversify their diets. They often had to purchase vegetables from a weekly market in Guinguinéo, which presented another problem—storing the produce was difficult, and it didn’t last long. However Coumba says that, “thanks to CREATE!, the women in our village started gardening as a way to diversify our food sources and improve food security. At first, it was challenging because we lacked experience. However, with the support of our technician, we learned many gardening techniques. Today, we grow tomatoes, onions, eggplants, and peppers, not only for our own consumption but also to sell at the local market, generating extra income.” Moreover, she says that beyond agriculture, CREATE! has fostered a strong sense of community. Women in the village have gained confidence and autonomy, forming support groups to share experiences and knowledge: “This has strengthened the bonds between us and created a true spirit of solidarity.”

Similarly, Khady, the treasurer of the Ngaraff cooperative group, spoke about how CREATE! has changed daily life in her village. Before CREATE! arrived, Ngaraff faced difficulties related to food security and income generation. Although they had previously attempted to grow vegetables, a lack of financial resources and technical support led to the failure of the project. One of the first steps was establishing a garden site, and through training in vegetable-growing techniques, irrigation, and resource management, the community learned how to cultivate their land effectively. Now, Khady notes, “we grow enough vegetables to meet our families’ needs and sell the surplus in local markets, which has significantly improved our financial situation.” Khady’s story echoes the broader sentiment across many villages—CREATE!’s support has been pivotal in driving agricultural success, empowering women, and enhancing food security.

The success of CREATE! in these communities is not just reflected in personal stories, but also in the measurable outcomes of the project:

  • Water Access: CREATE!’s solar-powered pumps delivered over 428,000 liters of fresh, clean water to partner communities. This access to reliable water has been crucial for both household use and agricultural productivity.
  • Food Production: Partner communities produced an impressive 23,346 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables, contributing to improved food security and better nutrition. The project has helped diversify diets by introducing a variety of crops such as tomatoes, onions, and peppers.
  • Leafy Greens Harvest: Women participating in the project harvested more than 6,300 bunches of leafy greens, providing essential vitamins and nutrients to their families and improving dietary diversity.
  • Economic Impact: The average participant earned and saved nearly $23 per month from the sale of surplus produce and poultry, providing families with a reliable source of income to support their households.

The success of CREATE!’s initiatives in rural Senegal highlights the powerful difference that sustainable development can make in tackling long-standing challenges like food insecurity and poverty. By providing communities with the skills, tools, and infrastructure to grow their own food, manage their water resources, and generate income, CREATE! is helping them achieve greater self-reliance and resilience. The transformation seen in villages like Keur Birame and Ngaraff is a testament to the effectiveness of this approach, which not only addresses immediate needs but also empowers communities to shape their own futures. This summer’s achievements provide a solid foundation for continued growth, and there is every reason to believe that the benefits will continue to ripple out, reaching more people and further enhancing the well-being of these rural communities.

The progress we made together is a testament to the dedication of the villagers and the unwavering support of our donors. None of this would have been possible without your generosity. On behalf of the communities in rural Senegal, we extend our deepest gratitude for your continued belief in and support of CREATE!’s mission. Together, we are building brighter, more sustainable futures.

Thank you.
