Water for All: pedal pumps and wells for families

after the destruction caused by Cyclone Freddy that hit Malawi on March, the Country is trying to rebuild houses and economic activities. However, despite the efforts of the local population and of some humanitarian organizations, our local referents witness a real lack of aid and of intervention by the Government of Malawi. A great number of people still live in refugee camps, without access to clean water and health care services, facing the spread of infections and diseases. Infection prevention and control (IPC) are practical measures fundamental to prevent harm caused by infections (like Cholera) to the community and to all the workers on the field. Data collected by UNICEF in September 2023 reports that at the moment more than 3.4 million of people are at risk of contracting Cholera and 44% of people critically reach WASH Hygiene supplies. WASH are all measures taken to guarantee environmental hygiene, safe water of all used within the health facility.

Through this project Aleimar would like to support the most fragile local population, distributing pedal pumps and building wells according to the real needs reported by our local referents. Moreover, the Government of Malawi has established that when a new school has to be built, it must be at least 5 kilometers from the next one and it must have a well with drinkable water and toilets separated for girls, boys and teachers.

These new correct standards make us understand how fundamental is access to water in order to prevent diseases, infection and to promote local development also in the agricultural field.
