Greening ! Come hell or high water... or no water?

Every one has something to give to this dream!
Every one has something to give to this dream!

It is incredible all the amazing things people can accomplish when working together!!!

Up to this moment we have 2.000 baby trees growing in our Green house, all of them are from endangered species that have been over-exploited by humans. We were planning to get the most out of this rain season and plant as many trees as we could, but unfortunately the climate didn’t agree with us and it has been raining way less than what is necessary to ensure the survival of the trees so we’ve decided not to plant them. This scare of rain is caused by two main reasons: Climate change and a meteorological phenomena called El Niño. Tropical dry forests usually have 6 months with frequent rains and 6 months with no rain at all, and this year we are having some days with rain followed by several days of intense sun. This is causing a high loss rate of viable seeds since seeds have evolved to start their germination process once they identify that the rain season has started and when they have enough humidity they will start germinating and when the seed starts this process is extremely vulnerable to dryness.

Another consequence of this situation is the survival of the samplings (baby trees) in the forests; due to the drought, most of the seeds that were supposed to germinate naturally are not doing so because there isn’t enough humidity, and those that have managed to germinate are having a really hard time living on with so little water. We have been constantly visiting the trees that are fructifying because some of the species are so scare that we can visit 100% of the individuals in one morning and we’ve been able to witness how the samplings are dying in the middle of the rainy season.

As we said this is not normal at all and we understand it as a reminder of the importance of what we are doing. More actions are urgently needed and we will keep it up thanks to each of our donors. If we can´t plant trees on the field during this rain season we will need to plant the double next year, this means that we will need a lot of help so don’t hesitate and visit us to give us a hand and plant some endangered species with us next May!!!
