Just after the rains - Hope

By Dr Antony Kingsley | CEO

Just After the Rains –
Just after the rains, the villages in Sierra Leone are coming alive again.
Men and women are working together to prepare new market gardens. The work is hard, but there is a real sense of purpose. Land is being cleared, soil prepared and garden beds made ready for planting.
For these communities, this is about much more than growing vegetables. It is about tackling hunger.
In some villages, families have so little food that there are times when they may eat only one meal a day.
This is a daily struggle, especially for families with young children. When there is not enough food, health suffers, children can struggle to concentrate at school and families have fewer opportunities to improve their livelihoods.
The new gardens offer a practical response. Men are working alongside the women, helping with the heavier work of clearing and preparing the land. The women are taking the lead in preparing and managing the gardens, growing vegetables that can be eaten at home and sold locally.
A successful garden can mean more food on the family table. It can also provide a small income from selling surplus produce. That income can help meet the costs of food, children’s needs, schooling and other essentials.
Water Makes It Possible
At the same time, new wells are being built to provide the reliable water needed to make these gardens work.
In Dame Nhae, a new well is being constructed that will support more than 500 people.
Reliable water will help families spend less time collecting water and make it possible to grow food more successfully throughout the dry season.
The communities themselves are putting in the work – clearing land, preparing beds and establishing and managing the gardens. WellFound’s role is to work alongside them, helping provide the reliable water and practical support that can make those efforts sustainable.
For us, this is what makes the work so meaningful. A productive garden can mean more food on the family table. Surplus produce can generate an income. And reliable water can give families greater opportunity to build a more secure livelihood.
The rains have gone, the work has begun, and the communities are looking ahead.
Together, we are turning water into food, food into opportunity, and opportunity into hope.
