We Love Reading Report November 2022

By Rana Dajani | Founder

In the past 3 months, we participated in the Interactive Book Fair organized by the Ministry of Culture and held 60 reading sessions in all the Jordanian districts, impacting more than 1200 children as a part of the National Reading campaign in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture in order to change mindsets through reading to create change makers.

After the success of this campaign, the Jordanian Ministry of Culture announced the 29th of September to become the “National Reading Day” in Jordan.

We have trained 54 new WLR ambassadors on our online training platform, and still counting the number of children impacted 243 children.

This September “We Love Reading program” Founder Professor Rana Dajani received the Fair Saturday Award for the year 2022 for her efforts to develop society through reading.

We also published a study under the title “Predictors of Literacy and Attitudes Toward Reading Among Syrian Refugee Children in Jordan”

We conducted in-home literacy assessments using the holistic assessment of learning and development outcomes with 322 Syrian refugee mother-child who lived in Jordan.

It showed that child age, maternal education, and maternal ability to read all predicted child literacy. Although maternal literacy predicted it only among children enrolled in school. Our results suggest an urgent need to improve literacy skills among refugee children in Jordan.

We have also distributed more copies of our latest book Mama’s Magic which is based on the story of a Syrian refugee mother and her daughter who through We Love Reading have discovered the magic of reading and becoming changemakers! A total of 1005 copies of Mama the storyteller were distributed in the past 4 months.

In the last 4 months, We Love Reading online training has reached 3 new countries in Africa: Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, and Kenya.

A total of 1095 books were distributed in the past 4 months,

Each ambassador received a book package to start their own library, the package contains 10 books that are fun, creative, and unleash the children’s imaginations. Books are developed according to set criteria and methodology, taking into account factors such as theme, relevancy to the children’s culture and background, language, and age-appropriateness. The books cover a variety of themes, including environmental awareness, empathy, gender, non-violence, disabilities, and refugees. Your donations also helped us conduct research to assess the impact of the program on children’s resilience and self-compassion.

In our effort to enhance education through nonformal education, We Love Reading participated in multiple international education-related events such as the “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces UNESCO Conference”, and “United Nations Transforming Education Summit” where We Love Reading founder Prof. Rana Dajani moderated several sessions.
