WeOwnTV is a creative collective dedicated to elevating independent West African cinema. Born in Freetown in 2009, our programs emerged from a desire to help young creatives tell their own stories. What started as a workshops grew into a regional platform for artistic expression-supporting both education and and top-tier media production. We plan to launch the WeOwnTV Digital Hub in 2026 expanding our mission to include an online platform that connects filmmakers and audiences across continents.
Across West Africa, filmmakers face a persistent set of obstacles: Few distribution options for independent films Unstable or nonexistent funding pathways A lack of centralized spaces for collaboration, mentorship, and visibility Global platforms rarely highlight African perspectives authenticity, while we know audiences-both local and global-are hungry for stories that reflect the vibrancy, complexity, and honesty of West African life.
WeOwnTV has worked now for over a decade to reposed to many of these issues. The WeOwnTV Digital Hub will allow us to bridges these gaps and help close the circle connecting media makers directly with their audience. It offers filmmakers a platform built for them and with them, providing visibility, connection, tools, and community-so their work can thrive, circulate, and reach the viewers who need it most.
WeOwnTV's mission is to cultivate a thriving space where independent films are produced, celebrated, and widely seen-serving as catalysts for social change and cultural understanding. Through media education, mentorship, professional training, and direct grants, we support emerging and established filmmakers throughout West Africa. Our goal is simple and unwavering: to elevate West African stories and empower the creators behind them.
