Challenge
Somalia is about to experience a 6th failed rain season. This has put unimaginable stress on people, forcing them to sell their livestock, skip meals, pull kids from school, to even leave their homes. Humanitarians are trying to respond to the need, but there are limitations in getting the needed resources to respond to the scale of the needs. Therefore, we want to appeal to our global neighbourhood, to humanize those impacted by drought and appeal to our collective concern and generosity.
Solution
The Somali Resilience Program (SomReP) is a consortium of 8 NGOs (ACF; ADRA; CARE; COOPI; DRC; Oxfam; Shaqodoon; World Vision) that was formed after the 2011 famine in Somalia, to better support communities overcome challenges like droughts while they work to move out of poverty in the long term. One tool used is the Crisis Modifier Contingency Fund. This pooled fund allows households access short-term, 3-month, funding that helps the overcome the acute challenges that follow a disaster.
Long-Term Impact
The SomReP has been using the Crisis Modifier since 2014 as a proven intervention to help households overcome the shocks of disasters like droughts and floods. In 2022 alone, the SomReP supported 3,142 households in the worst-hit areas with cash transfers as part of the Crisis Modifier. This provided much needed resources to help families meet their immidate need and allowed them to stay in their homes.
