Challenge (update)

Somalia presently faces an increased chance of climate-related disasters, despite the country emerging from one of the worst droughts in the last 40 years. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) forecasts a 90% probability that the onset of El Niño, together with an expected positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), will impact Somalia during the second half of 2023. While El Niño doesn’t always manifest in the same manner, in Somalia, El Niño has been associated with flooding and heavy rain in the south, and droughts in the north. For the period of October to December of 2023, above-average rain is expected for the Deyr Rain season.

Solution [update]

The Somali Resilience Program (SomReP) is a consortium of 8 NGOs (ACF; ADRA; CARE; COOPI; DRC; Oxfam; Shaqodoon; World Vision) that was formed after the 2011 famine in Somalia, to better support communities in overcoming challenges like droughts while they work to move out of poverty in the long term. One tool used is the Crisis Modifier Contingency Fund. This pooled fund allows households access short-term, 3-month, funding that helps them overcome the acute challenges that follow a disaster.

[Update]

As Somalia is experiencing unprecedented levels of floods, this campaign aims to pivot the funds raised for the drought appeal to support the vulnerable households impacted by the floods. This initiative will entail layering this fund in the existing donor-funded project of SomReP to distribute Non-Food Items (NFIs) and emergency relief items including essential food packages to the hard-hit Somali households.

Long-Term Impact

The SomReP has been using the Crisis Modifier since 2014 as a proven intervention to help households overcome the shocks of disasters like droughts and floods. In 2022 alone, the SomReP supported 3,142 households in the worst-hit areas with cash transfers as part of the Crisis Modifier. This provided much-needed resources to help families meet their immediate needs and allowed them to stay in their homes.

Project update as of 18th of November, 2023

Thank you for your generous support in this fundraising campaign. We truly appreciate your kind support. The fundraising initiative for the campaign has now ended. The proceeds from the campaign will be used to support the current flood crisis-impacted vulnerable families targeted by the Somali Resilience Program (SomReP). This will entail layering the fund in the current flood response work of SomReP and its partners to provide immediate relief materials to the hard-hit households. The detailed report of the beneficiaries served along with media content and monitoring insights will be provided to the registered donors (in the mailing list) by the end of December 2023.

Many thank you for your generous support!
