Widowhood in Nepal and BEF's Efforts

By Surendra Pariyar | Co-founder & Project Leader

Introduction

Widowhood in Nepal is a significant social issue, deeply rooted in cultural, economic, and gender-based disparities. Widows in Nepal, particularly in rural areas, often face severe stigmatization, marginalization, and economic hardship. These challenges are exacerbated by traditional societal norms that can limit a widow's access to property, financial stability, and social support, leaving many women in vulnerable conditions.

Challenges Faced by Widows

In Nepal, widows are frequently subject to social ostracism, where they are blamed for their husband's death and seen as bearers of bad luck. This societal stigma leads to isolation, reducing their opportunities for remarriage, employment, and social inclusion. Furthermore, the economic challenges are immense, as many widows are deprived of property rights and struggle to sustain their families, often becoming the sole providers for their children. This situation is particularly dire for widows with dependent children, as they must navigate these challenges while ensuring their children’s education and well-being.

Bahini Educare Foundation's Role

The Bahini Educare Foundation is at the forefront of addressing the challenges faced by widows in Nepal, with a particular focus on single mothers, many of whom are widows. The foundation's Educare Family Program is a key initiative that supports single mothers by providing educational opportunities for their children, thus alleviating some of the financial burdens that come with widowhood. Since its inception in 2014, the program has supported over 80 families, with 50 families currently benefiting from the initiative. This program not only aids in the education of children but also empowers mothers with income-generating projects, helping them to achieve financial independence.

The foundation’s efforts extend beyond mere financial assistance. They actively work to reduce the stigma associated with widowhood through awareness programs in health, hygiene, and women's rights. These programs aim to build confidence and social capital among widows, enabling them to integrate more fully into their communities.

Future Outlook

Bahini Educare Foundation plans to expand its operations to Tanahun in 2025, recognizing the need to reach more widows and single mothers across Nepal. This expansion is crucial in addressing the widespread challenges of widowhood in the country, as it will enable the foundation to provide support to a larger number of women and children who are in desperate need of assistance.
